Anti-reflective (AR) coating is one of the most commonly recommended lens upgrades — and one of the most commonly declined, usually because patients are not sure whether it is worth the additional cost.

The short answer: for most people, yes. But the longer answer involves understanding what AR coating actually does, what it does not do, and why the quality of the coating matters as much as whether you have it at all.

AR coating is the single most impactful lens upgrade for anyone who drives at night or uses screens. Reducing reflected light from 8% to under 0.5% is not a cosmetic improvement — it is a meaningful increase in the amount of light reaching your retina.

Anti-reflective coating is a thin, multi-layer optical coating applied to the surface of eyeglass lenses. It works by using destructive interference to cancel out the light waves that would otherwise reflect off the lens surface.

Without AR coating, approximately 8–10% of light is reflected off each lens surface (front and back). This reflected light creates the glare and reflections visible on uncoated lenses — the white reflections in photographs, the halos around lights at night, and the distracting reflections that other people see when looking at your glasses.

With AR coating, reflections are reduced to less than 1% of incident light. The lenses become nearly invisible, and the light that would have been reflected is transmitted through the lens to your eye.

Essential for Certain Lens Types

AR coating is not optional for some lens configurations:

  • High-index lenses: Higher-index materials reflect more light than standard plastic. Without AR coating, high-index lenses can reflect up to 50% more light than standard lenses. AR coating is essentially mandatory for high-index lenses.
  • Progressive lenses: The optical complexity of progressive lenses makes reflections more distracting. AR coating is strongly recommended.

Requires Proper Care

AR coating is more susceptible to scratching than uncoated lenses if cleaned improperly. Never use paper products (tissues, paper towels) to clean AR-coated lenses — the abrasive fibers will scratch the coating. Use only a clean microfiber cloth and appropriate lens cleaning solution.

Quality Varies Significantly

Not all AR coatings are equal. Budget AR coatings may peel, crack, or develop a haze over time. Premium AR coatings from reputable manufacturers are significantly more durable and maintain their optical properties for the life of the lens.
