How to Choose Designer Eyeglass Frames That Actually Suit You

Choosing eyeglass frames should be one of the most personal decisions you make. You wear them on your face every single day — they're part of how the world sees you, and how you see yourself. Yet most people approach the process with anxiety, unsure of what to look for beyond a vague sense of "does this look okay?"

At Trendsetter Eyewear, we believe frame selection is an art form. Here's how our trained opticians think about it — and how you can apply the same principles.

Start With Face Shape — But Don't Stop There

You've probably heard the advice: oval faces can wear anything, round faces need angular frames, square faces need rounded frames. This is a useful starting point, but it's only one dimension of a much richer picture.

The Classic Face Shape Guide

Oval: Considered the most versatile face shape. Most frame styles work well. You have the freedom to experiment with bold, oversized, or geometric shapes.

Round: Faces with soft curves and similar width and length benefit from frames that add definition — rectangular, angular, or geometric shapes that create the appearance of length.

Square: Strong jawlines and broad foreheads are balanced by oval, round, or cat-eye frames that soften the angles and add width at the top.

Heart/Inverted Triangle: Wider at the forehead, narrower at the chin. Bottom-heavy frames, rimless styles, or frames with low-set temples draw attention downward and balance the proportions.

Oblong/Rectangle: Longer than wide, with a narrow face. Oversized frames, deep frames, or decorative temples add width and break up the vertical length.

Diamond: Wide cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin. Oval and cat-eye frames that emphasize the cheekbones work beautifully.

Consider Your Coloring

Frame color is as important as frame shape. The goal is harmony — frames that complement your natural coloring rather than fighting it.

Warm coloring (golden skin tones, brown or auburn hair, green or hazel eyes): Warm frame colors — tortoiseshell, gold, warm browns, olive, and warm reds — tend to be most flattering.

Cool coloring (pink or blue undertones in skin, black or ash-blonde hair, blue or grey eyes): Cool frame colors — black, silver, grey, blue, and jewel tones like plum or teal — complement cool coloring beautifully.

Neutral coloring: Lucky you — you can wear almost anything. Experiment freely.

Think About Your Prescription

This is where working with a trained optician becomes essential. High prescriptions create specific optical considerations that affect which frames will work best for you.

High minus prescriptions (nearsightedness): Strong minus lenses are thickest at the edges. Smaller frames minimize edge thickness. Full-rim frames conceal the edges better than rimless or semi-rimless styles.

High plus prescriptions (farsightedness): Plus lenses are thickest in the center. Smaller frames reduce the "magnified eye" effect. Frames with a high bridge help center the optical zone correctly.

Progressive lenses: Require a minimum vertical lens height (typically 28–30mm) to accommodate the reading zone at the bottom. Very small or very narrow frames may not work with progressives.

Astigmatism: Frames that stay stable on your face are important — if frames tilt or slide, your astigmatism correction will be off-axis.

Match Frames to Your Lifestyle

The most beautiful frames in the world aren't right for you if they don't fit your life.

Active lifestyle: Look for lightweight materials (titanium, TR90) and frames with secure fit systems. Consider prescription sports eyewear for specific activities.

Professional environment: Classic shapes in neutral colors project authority and polish. Avoid overly trendy or fashion-forward styles if you want longevity.

Creative or fashion-forward: This is your chance to make a statement. Bold colors, unusual shapes, and distinctive details are all fair game.

Multiple pairs: Many of our patients have two or more pairs — a classic everyday pair and a more expressive pair for evenings or weekends. This is actually the most practical approach for people who wear glasses full-time.

The Luxury Difference: Why Brand Matters

Not all designer frames are created equal. At Trendsetter Eyewear, we carry brands we believe in — labels known for exceptional materials, construction, and design integrity.

Face à Face: French-designed frames with architectural precision and distinctive color palettes. A favorite among patients who want something truly unique.

Cartier: Iconic luxury with impeccable craftsmanship. Cartier frames are investments that hold their value and their beauty for years.

Tom Ford: Bold, cinematic design with a strong point of view. Tom Ford frames make a statement without trying too hard.

Morel: French heritage brand with exceptional hinge engineering and a commitment to quality that shows in every detail.

IL/LA: Independent French label with a focus on color and artisanal production. For patients who want something no one else is wearing.

Christian Dior, Valentino, Celine, Prada, Gucci, Versace: The great fashion houses bring their design DNA to eyewear with results that are unmistakably luxurious.

What to Expect at a Frame Fitting at Trendsetter Eyewear

When you come in for a frame consultation, our opticians don't just hand you a tray and step back. We:

  1. Ask about your lifestyle and preferences — what you wear, where you go, what matters to you in a frame
  2. Review your prescription and discuss any optical considerations
  3. Assess your face shape and coloring and pull frames we think will work
  4. Walk you through the options and explain why each one does or doesn't work for you
  5. Help you narrow down to the frames that are genuinely right for you — not just the ones you feel pressured to choose

We take the time because we know you'll be wearing these frames every day. Getting it right matters.
